DDB Chicago group creative director Don Pogany last year set out to capture America's reaction to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks using a digital camera to grab images of American flags and the people who fly them.
The results are in a 272-page book released last week, Our Flag Was Still There. 50 States in 100 Days: An American's Journey Across a Nation United.
Pogany spent $20,000, often adding side trips to his business travel, to put the book together. The effort was supported by the agency (several employees worked on the design and other aspects of the book), and client State Farm Insurance donated a por tion of the publishing costs.
The idea was born a week after the terrorist attacks when Pogany started taking pictures of flags flown in his neighborhood. "I wanted to capture all this overwhelming support of our country," he said.
One photo shows a mountain painted with an American flag near a small New Mexico town. Another shows a man in Alaska standing in front of a huge flag on a build ing. Some photos are accompanied by notes from Pogany's journal about his experiences.
All royalties from the book will be donated to Kids Voting USA, a voter-education program, Pogany said.
