Joe Caponigro, a former media director at McCann-Erickson, has been named the first president of Momentum's Detroit office.
The office was formerly run by Charlie Metzger, who was named new business director at McCann's Troy, Mich., office earlier this year. Both McCann and Momentum are units of the Interpublic Group of Cos.
Metzger did not hold the title of president at Momentum's Detroit operation. Giving that title to Caponigro is indicative of the increasing importance of the office and its growth, said Mark Shapiro, president and CEO of Momentum Worldwide in St. Louis.
When General Motors consolidated its media planning at GM Planworks last year, taking that task from its individual agencies including McCann, the national agency for Buick, Caponigro had the opportunity to go to Planworks. He could also continue as media director for the agency's remaining accounts, none of which possess the size or prestige of GM.
Caponigro, who had been at McCann for more than three years after 14 years at BBDO's Southfield, Mich., office, instead was offered the leadership position at Momentum.
Caponigro's goals for the office include continued enhancement of the creative level. Integration is also a focus "both for our clients and within the McCann environment," he said.
The New York-based global event marketing and promotion agency has increased its role on the Buick account and picked up several pieces of new business, including regional work for Coca Cola and Prestone.
Billings at Momentum in Detroit have increased more than 25 percent in the past several months, Caponigro said. The number of employees has risen from 17 a year ago to 24, and a few positions are yet to be filled.
Because of the growth, the office is shifting to a different floor of its building in order to have more space, Caponigro said.
Several former employees for GM Eventworks, which also concentrates on "experiential marketing," moved into the Momentum offices, which are adjacent to McCann's offices.
