ATLANTA GodwinGroup has won Mississippi Power's $2 million advertising account following a quiet review, the client confirmed.

Speaking for the Biloxi, Miss., client, Rex Kelley said the utility had decided to part ways with five-year incumbent Peter A. Mayer Advertising in New Orleans.

"We'd been through a good process with them but felt it was time to get a different approach as to how we present the business," said Kelley.

Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company in Atlanta, considered Lewis Communications in Mobile, Ala., Trone Atlanta and Maris, West & Baker in Jackson, Miss., all independent agencies, before choosing Godwin, Kelley said.

Donald Carson, agency executive vice president and manager of the shop's Biloxi office, will head up account service. Creative, media and research chores will be handled from Godwin's Jackson headquarters.

"Splitting the work between the two offices will let us take advantage of the strengths in both offices," said Carson. "We know the client's community; we live here and are part of their service territory."

Work begins immediately with a print ad in the Gulfport, Miss., region's newspapers. A corporate campaign is expected to launch by year's end.
