Mintz & Hoke Bids Farwell to Ames

BOSTON -- Ames Stores' decision to close its 330 stores effectively ends the eight-year relationship between the discount retailer and Mintz & Hoke.

The Rocky Hill, Conn., client announced on Wednesday that it will liquidate and close all operations in the next 10 weeks, citing steep declines in sales.

Ames had spent approximately $10 million on advertising in the first half of 2002, per CMR. Recent efforts from Avon, Conn.'s Mintz & Hoke featured the humorous spokescharacter "Gladys" and mainly promoted one-day sales events.

Agency CEO Chris Knopf said in light of the client's bankruptcy filing last summer and several subsequent rounds of store closings, he was prepared for the possibility of the chain's liquidation and intends to soldier on without cuts in the shop's 70-person staff, at least in the near-term.
