McClain Finlon Installs Managing Director

LOS ANGELES McClain Finlon has named Dave Southern managing director, a new position, the shop said.

Southern, 46, will be responsible for all "client-facing" activities at the Denver shop, including account management, creative, design, media and research. Agency CEO Cathey Finlon has held that responsibility, but said Southern was brought onboard to "deepen and expand" the shop's relationship with its clients, which include Xcel Energy, Qwest, Johns Manville and the Denver Zoo.

Finlon will continue to oversee areas such as new business, human resources, finance and operations at the independent shop, which claims $98 million in billings.

Southern was previously vice president of marketing at Bally Total Fitness in Chicago and was also managing director of Bally's Gorilla Sports Clubs division. Prior to that, he was national director of sales and marketing for Ernst & Young. He also served as vice president, account supervisor at DDB Needham in Chicago and as account executive at Tatham-Laird & Kudner in Chicago, managing accounts like Anheuser-Busch, the National Dairy Board, General Mills, Kraft and Procter & Gamble.
