DETROIT Mazda North American Operations told employees in an internal memo today that president and chief executive officer Charlie Hughes would step down effective Saturday.

A representative for the Irvine, Calif.-based automaker said no reason was given for Hughes’ departure and he would not speculate about where the executive is going. “He is simply leaving the company,” the representative said. Hughes could not be reached for comment.

John Mendel, executive vice president of sales, marketing, parts and service, will serve as acting president, the representative said.
