Matlock Presents Black Cuisine for Publix

ATLANTA Matlock Advertising has launched a broadcast and print campaign for Publix Supermarkets in conjunction with Black History Month, the shop said.

The independent Atlanta shop has produced the campaign each February since 1999.

This year's campaign focuses on the contributions African Americans have made to the nation's cuisine. The ads feature Leah Chase, chef at Dooky Chase Restaurant in New Orleans; Thelma Grundy, owner of Thelma's Kitchen in Atlanta; Joe Randall, owner of Joe Randall's Cooking School in Savannah, Ga.; and Elizabeth Omilami, who is affiliated with the charitable group Hosea William's Feed the Hungry Foundation in Atlanta.

Tagged "My recipe for living, my history," the work includes television and radio spots in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee and print ads throughout the Southeast. The shop also created activity sheets and posters for more than 700 schools in the Southeast to promote Black History Month.

"We took the market conditions into consideration and tried to steer clear of typical Black History Month themes," said Dameon Pope, an account executive at Matlock. "Instead of spotlighting past milestones in black history, we focused on how leading African Americans are making history today."

Publix operates about 850 stores in five states from its headquarters in Lakeland, Fla.
