Backed by some vivid anecdotal evidence, conventional wisdom says Americans now work so much that they have scarcely any leisure time. As reflected in the latest Harris Poll on the subject, though, the quantitative data indicate this popular notion is false.

Adults were asked how many hours a week they spend “at work, housekeeping or studies, including travel time to and from the job or school.” Responses averaged out to 45 hours, down from 50 hours in 2004 (when Harris last asked this question) and the lowest figure since 1975.
