Arnold staffer Hal Chase just won't quit. Or retire. At 85, Chase, a research director at the McLean, Va., shop, still puts in a 10-hour day.

Colleagues recently gathered for a surprise breakfast in honor of the octogenarian's birthday.

"We had the defibrillators handy," said agency president Ken Umansky. "He laughed and gavea speech."

The shop presented Chase with a selection of $85 gift certificates from his favorite stores and toasted him with champagne.

"He's the heart and soul of this place," said Umansky.

Chase's 50-year-plus ad career includes stints at Earle Palmer Brown in Bethesda, Md., and the New York and San Francisco offices of both BBDO and J. Walter Thompson.

Chase (pictured below), a member of the agency's new-business team, specializes in secondary research and strategic planning. He is currently creating a seniors insight group that focuses on marketing more effectively to the "boomer generation."
