Robert “Collie” Colombatto could recognize talent “like no other,” according to a former agency colleague.

“He’d hire [a person] who looked like someone he’d want to have working for him,” said Brad Ball, who started working with Colombatto at Davis, Johnson, Mogul & Colombatto and later became a partner. “And 99 percent of the time, he was right.”

Colombatto, a Los Angeles advertising legend who made his mark with campaigns for McDonald’s, Ralphs Groceries and KABC-TV, died Sept.
