Scott Nelson has been named executive creative director of J. Walter Thompson.
Nelson, mostly re-cently a group creative director at the Atlanta agency, replaces Mike Lollis, who retired earlier this year.
"We've been known for solid, strategic, smart work," said Nelson. "My goal is to move the shop more to the right side of the brain and strike a better balance between strategic and creative."
In the last weeks, Nelson has been given that opportunity as he and senior writer Alan Whitley prepare to defend JWT's signature U.S. Marine Corps account. The mandatory review begins next month.
"He has the passion and commitment to be an outstanding leader for our creative department and a dynamic partner to our clients," said JWT chief executive Jeff White.
Nelson said he wants to pursue business in the sports category.
"I feel real knowledgeable and have good instincts about what moves sports-minded people," he said.
Nelson now supervises an 18-member staff divided into four teams.
"I'm encouraging the younger teams to step up," he said. "And they have excellent creative stuff. I want everyone to feel part of a team, rather than a department dominated by a couple of superstars."
