OMD Adds $200 Mil.-Plus Duties for Siemens, Sony
LOS ANGELES—Omnicom Group's OMD has won European media duties for Sony and Siemens following reviews, sources said. The Sony business, which included consolidated duties for Sony's music, consumer electronics and theatrical accounts, was estimated at $100 million-plus, while Siemen's work, for its mobile phones, was estimated at $100 million. In the Sony review, OMD bested Cordiant Communications Group and Publicis Groupe's Zenith Media and WPP Group's MindShare, both London, while the Siemens account was won in competition against Aegis Group's Carat, sources said.
Toyota Seeks Asian-American Target Shop
CHICAGO—Toyota is ready to launch a search for its first Asian American target agency, according to Steve Sturm, vp, marketing Toyota Motor Sales USA. Sturm did not disclose a planned budget for Asian target work. The automaker last month launched new TV and print aimed at African Americans from Burrell Communications in Chicago. Toyota last year committed to spending $8 billion over 10 years on minority efforts, including marketing, following accusations that an ad from lead agency Saatchi & Saatchi was insensitive.
GNC Sets Sights on Y&R
NEW YORK—General Nutrition Cos. is expected to consolidate its estimated $30 million ad duties at WPP Group's Young & Rubicam in Chicago, sources said. The shop leveraged a relationship with GNC parent Royal Numico to take on GNC and sold the Pittsburgh, Pa., client on an array of services, said sources. The agency is said to be in final negotiations to handle the business. The shop declined comment; the client did not return calls.
Manson to Appear in BMW Films
CHICAGO—Marilyn Manson will make a cameo appearance in the upcoming BMW Films series, joining a cast that includes singer James Brown and actors Ray Liotta, F. Murray Abraham, Gary Oldman and Clive Owen, sources said. The online film series breaks on Oct. 17. The films, by BMW of North America and Fallon in Minneapolis, were directed by Tony Scott, John Woo and Joe Carnahan.
RPA Debuts New Honda Civic Ads
LOS ANGELES—American Honda Motor Co. launches a campaign this week for the 2003 Honda Civic. Created by Rubin Postaer and Associates in Santa Monica, Calif., the effort includes three 30-second TV spots and three print ads. Spending on the campaign is $20-25 million, sources said. TV commercials show young people in Civics asking questions. In one, a man drives the coupe down a highway in Hawaii as his counterpart wonders how an island can have interstate highways. RPA this week also breaks its first Honda corporate ad for IMAX theaters. The ad features vehicles based on children's drawings and is tagged, "The power of dreams." It breaks on Oct. 17.
Bousquette Takes Sears Marketing Post
CHICAGO—Janine Bousquette, a marketing veteran whose résumé includes stints at eToys, Pepsi-Cola and Procter & Gamble, takes the new post of evp and chief customer marketing officer for Sears, Roebuck and Co. on Nov. 1. Bousquette, 41, replaces vp, marketing David Selby, 45, who is leaving on Oct. 15. Selby, a former Leo Burnett executive, could not be reached.
Fifth Exec Pleads Guilty in Print-House Investigation
NEW YORK—Lori Montgomery, a minority owner and former treasurer of Quality House of Graphics in New York, last week pleaded guilty to rigging bids submitted to Grey, the Department of Justice said. Montgomery is the fifth individual connected to the case that has pleaded guilty within the last two weeks. Also named as co-conspirators in the case are John Steinmetz, a vp and associate director of graphic services at Grey, and James Rattoballi, part-owner of an unnamed graphic-services company and a broker for other printing suppliers. Prosecutors identified a third former Quality House of Graphics salesperson, but declined to make the name public.
Carrier Corp. has sent out RFPs for its $5-10 million ad account, the company said. The incumbent, Havas' Euro RSCG Tatham Partners in Chicago, is expected to defend. … Pile and Co. confirmed it is handling the review for Timex's $5-10 million account, which had been with Publicis' Fallon in Minneapolis. That shop is not defending. … Frontier Airlines this week is expected to name an agency to handle its estimated $10 million account. Finalists are davidandgoliath in Los Angeles; McClain Finlon Advertising in Denver; Grey in New York; and Cunningham Iverson Group in Houston. Advertising has been in-house. … Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. has reassigned creative duties on its Lamisil prescription toenail-fungus medication to Interpublic Group's Deutsch in New York, said sources. The business was handled by Lowe unit Alchemy in New York. Separately, Novartis by Nov. 1 will select an agency to handle its new $100 million Zelnorm brand. Finalists are New York shops Deutsch, owned by IPG, and Cline, Davis & Mann, an Omnicom shop. … Initiative Partners, a unit of IPG's Initiative Media North America, based in Los Angeles, has retained its $80 million Six Flags media account following a review, an Ackerman McQueen representative confirmed. The incumbent pitched with Six Flags' creative shop Ackerman McQueen in Oklahoma City against WPP Group's MindShare, Aegis Group's Carat, and Publicis Groupe's Zenith Media, all New York. … Publicis Group's Fallon no longer is working for L'Oréal USA, following the client's shift of the $20-30 million Garnier Fructis duties to Publicis in New York. Publicis handles the brand in Europe and L'Oréal now plans to adapt the European work for the U.S., said sources. Fallon president Alison Burns confirmed the split but declined further comment.
