Riney, Dusenberry Honored by 4A’s

SAN FRANCISCO—Creative director Hal Riney and retired BBDO North America chairman Phil Dusenberry won lifetime-achievement awards from the American Association of Advertising Agencies last week. The awards came on opening night of the 2002 4A’s Creative Conference in San Francisco. Reached after the speech, Riney denied reports that he was going to open his own shop after his contract with Publicis & Hal Riney expires. “I said I’d expect to be looking for work,” Riney said, adding, “I’m not thinking about going out and planting tomatoes.”

Mediaedge:cia Wins ChevronTexaco Europe

NEW YORK—WPP Group’s Mediaedge:cia has won ChevronTexaco’s $100 million Pan-European media planning and buying account and now has the San Francisco-based oil giant’s entire $150 million global account. Mediaedge:cia had already handled the $50 million U.S. business. In the U.S., the account is handled by the San Francisco office, which led the pitches in this review, sources said. Mediaedge:cia declined to comment. A client representative said a decision on the European business had not been made.

McCann-Erickson Elevates McLaren

SAN FRANCISCO—Michael McLaren, evp and global account director on Microsoft at McCann-Erickson here, has been promoted to evp and director of client services. He will have an expanded relationship with Microsoft and oversee other clients, including Applied Materials and Del Monte. To fill McLaren’s previous position, McCann has hired Harry Corsham, former account director on Hewlett-Packard at Publicis & Hal Riney.

El Pollo Loco in Review

LOS ANGELES—El Pollo Loco has launched a review for its $7 million general-market creative and media account, the client confirmed. Search consultant Mike Marsak of Effective Marketing Strategies in Surprise, Ariz., is leading the search. Four-year incumbent Dailey & Associates in West Hollywood, Calif., said it is not defending. The search will primarily focus on shops with established Southern California offices. Credentials are due Dec. 11, with a decision by the end of February. The review comes a month after the Irvine, Calif., chain hired Karen Eadon as vp and chief marketing officer. She was previously vp of U.S. marketing for McDonald’s.

Riney Hires 3 For HP Team

SAN FRANCISCO—Publicis & Hal Riney here is adding three more executives to its Hewlett-Packard account team. The agency named Frank Schumacher svp and worldwide group account director; Julie Rieger svp and global media director; and Michele Bogdan svp and group account director on the HP PC group.

Hill, Holliday S.F. Hires Media Director

BOSTON—Laura Bracken has joined the San Francisco office of Interpublic Group’s Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos as svp, media director. The post had been vacant for about a year. She held a similar job at Saatchi & Saatchi, San Francisco, which closed in 2001.
