NEW YORK WPP's GroupM has promoted CFO Rupert Day to the new post of global COO, effective immediately. The unit manages the holding company's media networks Maxus, MediaCom, Mediaedge:cia and MindShare.
Day reports to GroupM chief executive Irwin Gotlieb.
"Rupert has been the de-facto COO of GroupM for quite some time now while
also carrying the heavy responsibilities of chief financial officer," Gotlieb said in a statement. "But it's simply too much of a load for one person. This move recognizes the great work he's been doing for us, as well the need for a deeper management structure at GroupM."
As COO, Day will be responsible for a wide range of strategic, administrative, and operational duties involving all GroupM operating agencies. He will also work with WPP senior management to explore and develop new business opportunities, acquisitions and joint ventures worldwide.
Day, who is based in New York, was named GroupM CFO in 2003 after working
for more than 10 years at various WPP subsidiary companies covering advertising, market research and media in Europe, Asia Pacific and North America.
Day was part of the original management team that launched MindShare globally.
A U.K. chartered accountant with experience in investment banking, he joined WPP in 1988 to work on acquisitions and investor relations.
