LAS VEGAS-Steering clear of present battles, Microsoft founder Bill Gates opened the Comdex technology show with his traditional glimpse of the future, which this time included a clipboard-shaped computer and a new era of software without Web browsers, the Associated Press reported.

Gates, who recently gave up the chief executive post to assume the more nebulous title of chief software architect, spoke at length Sunday about his software company’s “.Net” strategy, which relies on open Internet standards rather than Web browsers or Windows-type operating systems as a unifying platform for the software on different devices.
