Epson Selects Butler, Shine

LOS ANGELES Independent Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners has won Epson's $30 million-plus creative and media account.

The other finalists were MDC Partners' VitroRobertson in San Diego and independent SS+K in New York.

The incumbent, Omnicom Group's DDB in Venice, Calif., retains Epson's professional imaging business, worth an estimated $5 million.

"We've been fans of Epson for a long time, so it was a passion play for us, especially on the creative side," said John Butler, partner and ecd at the shop in Sausalito, Calif.

"Butler, Shine impressed us enormously with a totally integrated solution that celebrates the Epson brand and its heritage of delivering creative excellence through our imaging product line," said Jeff Marks, Epson director of marketing and communications, in a statement.

Russel Wohlwerth, principal search consultant for Ark Advisors, Los Angeles
and New York, led the review that launched in April.

Proxicom, Marina del Rey, Calif., won a separate review for interactive duties. Proxicom competed against the California offices of Sapient in Santa Monicaand WhittmanHart Interactive in Century City. That work had for the most part been handled in-house.

Long Beach, Calif.-based Epson spent $35 million on ads in 2006, down from $65 million the previous year, per TNS Media Intelligence.
