Elder Becomes Partner, President of Heat

SAN FRANCISCO Former Goodby, Silverstein & Partners associate partner John Elder has been named president of Heat, according to the agency.

Elder, 40, is also an equity partner of Heat in San Francisco, which launched seven months ago, changing its name from Black Rocket.

Heat founder Steve Stone now serves as chairman and creative director.

Both Stone and Elder are Goodby alum. Elder was on his second tour of duty at Omnicom Group's Goodby, where as a group account director he worked on accounts such as Discover Card and eBay, as well as new business pitches.

He also founded the interactive group at Goodby and contributed to campaigns for Polaroid, Porsche, Pizza Hut and Hewlett-Packard, among others.

At Heat, Elder will oversee new business development and provide strategy for clients Conde Nast and Moderati, the agency said.

"He's smart, he's funny and he's got fire in his belly," Stone said. "I can already tell he's got the 'hunter' gene I've always looked for in a partner. We're trying to build a place where we have smart, talented people who are like magnets for clients and future employees. John is certainly one of those magnets."

Elder said he sees great opportunity in working with a smaller agency.

"The business has been undergoing a transformation and the winning companies are smaller, more nimble players who can think beyond traditional advertising solutions," he said.

During his 20-year career, Elder has also worked at Arnold in Boston and San Francisco technology agency Winkler Advertising.
