Draft Lays Off 40-50 Staffers

IPG's Draft has cut 40 to 50 employees—about 7 percent of its New York office staff—as it winds down its relationship with Bank of America, sources said. A Draft rep confirmed layoffs in N.Y., "to bring staffing levels in line with revenue," but would not discuss specific numbers. BofA in August awarded its $600 million account to Omnicom.



Publicis' klues Named media CEO

NEW YORK Jack Klues, worldwide CEO of Starcom MediaVest Group, has been named chairman of Publicis Groupe Media. In this new post, Klues, 50, adds oversight for all of the holding company's media agency networks, including ZenithOptimedia, which previously reported separately to Publicis' senior management. Stepping into Klues' position will be Renetta McCann, who has been SMG's CEO of the Americas, a position that will not be filled.



consumer drug ads scrutinized

NEW YORK Commercial Alert has collected the endorsement of 211 medical professors for a proposed ban on all direct-to-consumer drug ads. The group said it would present the petition to the FDA, which starts a DTC rules review on Nov. 1. The professors' statement posits that DTC advertising "intrudes" on the doctor-patient relationship by inviting the latter to insist on being prescribed branded drugs. The document claims that DTC ads are "inherently misleading," because they feature emotive imagery and dialogue instead of hard facts.
