Travis to Media Director, Jacobs Gains Partnership
DALLAS--DDB Needham Dallas promoted Dale Travis to a newly created media director post and appointed new business head Phil Jacobs a managing partner.
Travis, who has logged nearly five years at DDB, previously was one of three group media directors. In his new position, he will oversee all media operations at the $171 million agency.
Jacobs, recruited in March 1996 from Valentine Radford in Kansas City, joins four other managing partners: Doug Walker, Margaret Bonner, Janet Bustin and Ruth Parr. The five-person team works in conjunction with chief executive and president Jake Schroepfer and vice chairman and chief creative officer Jim Ferguson to evaluate agency strategy, direction and policy.
Schroepfer said the promotions reflect the roles that Travis and Jacobs have played in the growth of the agency, which witnessed a 24 percent revenue gain in 1997 while landing accounts from clients including Midway Home Entertainment and UtiliCorp United. (1997 is the latest full-year revenue figures available from DDB.)
Travis logged six years at The Richards Group in Dallas before joining DDB. His 12-person department, which is responsible for media planning and print buying, works in tandem with DDB's Optimum Media in New York and Chicago and SpotPlus in Dallas to execute broadcast buys.
"[This is] the payoff for a lot of hard years of work," Travis said. "I look forward to growing the department."
Jacobs, who retains his director of strategic development title, will continue heading new business activities. Jacobs played a pivotal role in DDB's new business acquisitions in 1997-98 and has also taken the lead on account service for new telecom client Level 3 Communications. Billings on that account, won in July, are expected to exceed $30 million in 1998.
