The Thompson Agency has been selected to handle advertiising for Security Service Federal Credit Union, a 45-year-old financial institution with more than 424,000 members.

Said Ken Thompson, president of the San Antonio ad agency, "My personal goal has been to have a financial institution as a part of our client mix."

Thompson contacted the client earlier this year following the appointment of Jim Laffoon as the credit union's executive vice president and chief information officer. Laffoon is responsible for overseeing all marketing efforts.

"Jim gave us a single project and then two more," said Thompson. "I am elated that we moved from project work to being named agency of record."

Said Laffoon, "The Thompson Agency impressed me by doing a lot of things the right way, including listening, providing advice and ultimately exceeding my expectations."

Media for the rest of 2001 will include direct mail, radio, newspapers and outdoor.

The agency will be included in all phases of the company's marketing plans, said Laffoon, including research and development, promotions and training.

The size of the client's advertising budget was not disclosed. Media spending was less than $500,000 last year, according to CMR.

SSFCU has 27 service centers in San Antonio, Boerne and Uvalde, Texas; as well as Colorado Springs and Pueblo, Colo. It is the 11th largest credit union in the U.S. with more than $2.1 billion in assets.
