Shop Tops Mintz, Keiler to Snag Conn. Daily
BOSTON--Faced with increasing competition from online and niche publications, The Hartford Courant has named an agency of record for the first time in three years.
Cashman & Katz in Glastonbury, Conn., picked up creative and media chores after a review. Mintz & Hoke in Avon, Conn., and Keiler & Co. in Farmington, Conn., were finalists, according to sources.
Creative duties had been handled in-house. Susan Quirk, the Courant's creative director since 1995, said last week she resigned to pursue freelance opportunities from her home office in Simsbury, Conn.
Makiaris Media Services in Bloomfield, Conn., handled media buying chores for the newspaper last year, said Sylvia Chˆvez Sitters, director of marketing and strategic planning at the Courant.
Cashman & Katz's "energy and passion for doing business with the Courant" helped them land the business, Chˆvez Sitters said. "They displayed an understanding of the specific challenge that we gave them," which was to promote the paper's classified section.
"It's exciting for our agency to market the state's largest newspaper," said Tony Cashman, principal of Cashman & Katz. "It has a solid reputation and is one of the most credible news sources in Connecticut. We feel honored that they chose us."
Owned by Los Angles-based Times-Mirror, the Courant has a daily circulation of 212,000 and a Sunday circulation of 303,000, said Chˆvez Sitters.
Annual billings were not disclosed. The Courant spent less than $100,000 on advertising in 1998, according to Competitive Media Reporting.
