GM Planworks, Publicis Groupe's dedicated media-planning unit for General Motors, has named chief operating officer Mary Carpenter executive vice president of the agency. Carpenter, who has been with the Detroit-based unit since its inception in 2000, oversees all operational aspects of the company, including human resources, finance, systems and internal product development. The promotion reflects the continued expansion of her role, as well as her leadership in getting GM to assign out-of-home media buying to Publicis' Starcom in Chicago, according to Dennis Donlin, GM Planworks president. Carpenter began her career in 1987 as a planner/buyer for Procter & Gamble, Heinz, StarKist and Hallmark in Leo Burnett's media department, which later became Starcom. She later took over media duties on the agency's Oldsmobile account before becoming one of GM Planworks' original management team.
