Like all TV formats, reality’s decline may be cyclical. It might also be due to a creative slump among producers. But, if it doesn’t rebound soon, the decline could continue far past any normal cycle.

In addition to declining viewer interest, advertisers seem less excited by the genre. “I think what we liked about reality in the beginning was its rawness,” said Laura Caraccioli-Davis, senior vp, director of Starcom Entertainment. “It’s become so highly produced.”

With increased production values has come a sense of predictability, whether it’s battling the Guatemalan jungle on Survivor or Manhattan’s concrete jungle on both Apprentice franchises.
