Broadband Usage Up, Narrowband Down

NEW YORK -- Broadband usage accounted for more than half of all time spent online in January, out-pacing narrowband usage for the first time.

According to the Nielsen/NetRatings, broadband surfers logged 1.19 billion hours in January, comprising 51 percent of the 2.3 billion hours spent online. That represents a 64 percent improvement over the same time a year ago when broadband users logged 727 million hours, accounting for only 38 percent of the total time spent online.

Conversely, narrowband usage dropped three percent from 1.18 billion hours in January 2001 to 1.14 billion this January.

As with the time spent online by broadband surfers, the unique audience accessing the Internet via high-speed connections also continues to post gains year-over-year, according to Nielsen. Nearly 21.9 million surfers at-home visited the Internet via a broadband connection in January, jumping 67 percent from last year and representing 21 percent of the total online population.
