BOSTON–Saul Joseph “Joe” Hoffman, former chairman of Boston’s Ingalls agency and for decades one of the prime movers in New England’s advertising industry, died Sunday at his home in Andover, Mass. He was 82.

Hoffman in 1961 took over Ingalls Associates, Boston, which he and several partners sold to Quinn & Johnson/BBDO in 1984. Agency executives bought the shop back from Omnicom a few years later in a leveraged buyout. Ingalls in 1999 was sold to crosstown shop Holland Mark.
