Best Emerging Talent: Brenner, Coffin

LOS ANGELES Mike Brenner and Greg Coffin, a copywriter and an art director at Attik in San Francisco, were today named Best Emerging Talent at Adweek's Creative Conference: Mashup 2007.

Panelists and speakers at the event selected the duo. "After I accepted [that I won], very little besides the word 'wow' came out of my mouth," said Brenner.

The team convinced Toyota to advertise the Scion xD this summer using black-and-white drawings of angry creatures in the "Little deviants" campaign. The integrated effort consisted of animated 60-second cinema and TV spots, wild postings, a comic book, subway signs, scratch-n-sniff print ads and a microsite.

"For us it was a shock because there were a of talented nominees. The TBWA guys [Craig Allen and Eric Kallman, the art director and copywriter team for TBWA\C\D, New York, who were also nominated] . . . everybody follows their weird and funny style," said Coffin. One of the jokes making the rounds at the conference was that the winners would be deluged with calls from headhunters. Coffin isn't concerned. "Getting back to headhunters is priority zero for us," Coffin said.
