NEW YORK BBDO won best of show and the majority of prizes at Tuesday's 65th annual Obie Awards in San Diego.
Sponsored by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, the Obies honor creative excellence in outdoor advertising.
The top prize went to BBDO in New York for its BBC World billboards. The interactive units showed images and headlines that reflected current events. Passersby were then asked to use Bluetooth technology to select one of two available opinions and a running tally was displayed. For example, one billboard showed different pictures of the Chinese flag, and people could submit friendly or wary votes of country.
"This year's best of show combined relevancy, creativity and technology. This campaign incorporated qualities that strongly position the outdoor industry as a medium in the forefront of innovation," said Nancy Fletcher, OAAA president and CEO.
BBDO's work for BBC World also won in the categories media, billboard; media, series campaign; and digital display media, series campaign. BBDO offices in North America won nine of the 15 categories, with offices in New York, Detroit, San Francisco and Toronto receiving honors.
The Walt Disney Co. was also inducted into the OAAA's Hall of Fame for its long and continuous use of outdoor media that the organization holds in high regard. It joins past honorees such as the San Diego Zoo and Coca-Cola.
