AOL Time Warner Inc. has agreed to make a “voluntary” $72,000 payment to the federal government as a final punishment for knocking eight ABC stations off the air last year during the May “sweeps” period.
Time Warner Cable briefly pulled ABC off the air last May in a dispute with ABC’s parent, Walt Disney Co. (DIS), over the terms of carriage of the Disney Channel, a Disney cable-TV offering. The FCC found that yanking the station during the critical “sweeps” week was against the agency’s rules.
