NEW YORK Footwear and apparel company Timberland is hosting a series of outdoor, environment-themed events in 10 U.S. cities as part of its 2009 sponsorship of next month’s Green Apple Festival.

The festival is an annual music and Earth Day awareness event that  began in New York and is now in its third year. Participating cities in '09 include New York, Boston, Denver, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and San Francisco, among others.

Timberland has tailored the events to fit each city’s interests. For example, in Denver, a city of avid bicyclists, the brand has sponsored biking park posts. And in Washington, Timberland is offering free “pedicab” rides to festival volunteers, tourists and pedestrians from April 15-21.

Also in conjunction with the Green Apple Festival’s Earth Day weekend activities, the brand is launching an online “Earthkeeper Contest” next week. The grand prize -- a free "eco-tour" through the forests of Darwin, Australia -- will be awarded to two winners who submit the best entry on personal efforts to promote environmental sustainability.

Timberland will use the contest to market its Earthkeepers product line. According to the company, Earthkeepers footwear and apparel must meet design criteria around recycled, organic and renewable material content.
