It’s bad enough that Americans don’t get adequate time in bed. To make matters worse, many are “problem sleepers.” A Consumer Reports survey, conducted in April and released last month, puts 44 percent of adults in that category, which means “they have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or wake up too early at least eight nights per month.”

Many of these people have turned to medications in an effort to get a good night’s sleep. Nearly one-fifth of respondents said they have taken prescription or over-the-counter drugs for this purpose at least once a week.
