MSNBC.com to Boost Tech Coverage

MSNBC.com announced it will begin publishing content from CNET Networks Inc. and others in an effort to expand its coverage of the technology industry.

The news and information site, which is a joint venture of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and General Electric Co.'s (GE) NBC unit, already posts stories from The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Newsweek, Inside.com, Red Herring, BugNet and ZDNet. ZDNet was acquired in July 2000 by CNET (CNET).

MSNBC will publish daily technology news stories from CNET, as well as CNET video clips.

The site will also run several stories a week from MIT's Technology Review, mainly focusing on topics like biotechnology and nanotechnology. Richard Smith, a well-known privacy activist and chief privacy officer for the Privacy Foundation, will contribute a regular column on online privacy issues.

"The technology section is growing to offer the most comprehensive look at the latest news in the industry in an effort to meet the interests of our tech-savvy readers," said Merill Brown, editor-in-chief of MSNBC.com, in a statement.

News sites often use content-sharing agreements to beef up the depth of their coverage. Monday, the online divisions of the New York Times Co. (NYT) and Pearson PLC's (PSO) Financial Times Group announced that they would swap up to ten stories a day.
