America’s obesity epidemic hasn’t abated, despite anecdotal evidence to the contrary. The best one can say is that its rate of increase has slowed.

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gives the latest figures, covering first-quarter 2008. Among women, 27 percent of 20-39-year-olds were classified as obese, as were 29 percent of 40-59-year-olds and 27 percent of those 60 and older. The figures were similar for men, with 23 percent of the 20-39s, 31 percent of the 40-59s and 26 percent of the 60-plusers classified as obese.
