Sydney Yallen (shown at right), an elder statesman of the direct response industry and founder of Inter/Media Advertising, which grew into the Encino, Calif.-based Inter/Media Group of Cos., died recently at the age 85 as a result of a stroke.

His son Robert joined Yallen, who founded Inter/Media in 1974, at the company full-time in 1985. They built the firm into a $450 million media organization with nine different business units. Clients have included the U.S.
