NEW YORK Helen Johnston, the retired media research director at Grey in New York, died May 27 at her home in the company of her family.

Johnston, 74, succumbed to cancer, according to a niece, Victoria Sullivan.

She retired from Grey in April 2000 after a career that spanned four decades. Her husband, Timothy Joyce, a founder of Mediamark Research Inc. (MRI), passed away in 1997 after a long illness.

“Hers was a presence and personality not to be forgotten once encountered,” said Alain Tessier, a founder and chairman of MRI.
