Darren Moran Becomes Creative Chief at Havas N.Y.

Hire is one of many moves by the shop's new global president

Havas Worldwide represents Darren Moran's second shot at running a creative department.

Andrew Benett has been quite busy in his first seven months as global president of Havas Worldwide.

He has hired a global chief marketing officer, expanded the roles of digital leaders, become CEO of the agency’s New York office and pitched (and won) new business. And now he has found a new chief creative officer for New York.

Darren Moran, an executive creative director at BBDO and former CCO of Draftfcb, starts next week. He’ll lead a department of 110 that Lee Garfinkel, CCO for global brands and New York chairman, has run since Al Kelly left in September 2011. Garfinkel remains at the agency.

Moran has spent the past 10 months at BBDO, working on brands like Lowe's and Campbell's Soup and contributing to new business pitches, which of course will be a big part of his job at Havas. Benett also expects him to be aggressive in recruiting new talent.

Havas represents Moran’s second chance at being a creative chief. His first shot, at Draftfcb, lasted just 14 months. In that time frame, however, the agency produced memorable ads for Kraft’s Oreo and the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Moran, 45, seems eager to lead again.

"It's fun to be able to shape the course of the agency and the department through great hires, through inspiring better work," Moran said. "In some ways, I think I have even a better knack for making other people's work better than my own. So I'm real excited about the opportunity."

Benett, who talked to a dozen creative directors in the U.S. and Europe before hiring Moran, cited his maturity, digital smarts and respect within the industry. He also has diverse category experience, having worked on everything from Xerox, LG and MetLife to Bacardi, Chevron and Colgate. Before Draftfcb, Moran was a global creative director at Young & Rubicam in New York.

"He's a really powerful combination of being both strong in having a point of view but also [being] a great developer and nurturer of talent. And that's really important to me," Benett said.

In addition to his New York role, Moran will serve as co-CCO for North America along with Jason Peterson, CCO and co-president of the agency’s Chicago office. Peterson added the co-presidency this week.

Havas New York’s accounts include Reckitt Benckiser, New York Life, Dos Equis and Atlantic City Tourism.
