BBDO's Ruhanen Moves Into Omnicom Job

Takes big client role

Ruhanen will focus on major Omnicom clients.

Troy Ruhanen, BBDO's chairman and CEO of the Americas, has been promoted to the agency’s corporate parent Omnicom as an executive vp.

In his new role, Ruhanen, 46, is charged with driving cross-agency collaboration across Omnicom’s largest clients. He reports to Omnicom CEO John Wren.

“Troy is a rising leader within Omnicom and has a proven track record of effectively managing some of BBDO’s largest clients," Wren said. "His global experience in multiple categories including consumer packaged goods, auto, telecom, beverage and technology is perfect for the role of strengthening our relationships with our biggest clients by providing them with better and more integrated services.”

Ruhanen will not be replaced in his Americas role at BBDO. He has also been the lead on BBDO’s billion-dollar AT&T account but in February the agency hired Mark Cadman as BBDO evp, managing director of North America with oversight of AT&T. Cadman had been the CEO of Publicis Seattle, which works for T-Mobile.

Since joining BBDO in December 2004 as managing director in New York, Ruhanen has been on a fast track. In July of 2009 he became deputy chairman of North America before assuming his Americas responsibility in August 2011. In that role, Ruhanen was given oversight of BBDO’s operations in North, Central, and South America, including the company’s Proximity direct and digital agency network. It was a new position at BBDO, and Ruhanen reported to BBDO Worldwide president, CEO Andrew Robertson.

Prior to BBDO, the Australian was managing director of Leo Burnett in Sydney.
