Want to become a more empathetic listener and show that you get it? According to a recent post on Harvard Business Review, there are three critical components to understanding someone else’s point of view.
1. Situational awareness: Show that you get “it.” For starters, the post reveals you can understand your counterpart by showing you simply comprehend what they’re going through. This includes body language like nodding your head and saying simple things like, “I completely understand.” At that point, your colleague will see that you’ve “grasped their reality” and they’ll feel like you’re both on the same page.
2. Personal awareness: You get “them.” In addition to understanding their situation, you’ll need to show understanding for their strengths, weaknesses, hopes and priorities. Plus, you can start connecting on a personal level. The post indicates, “When you do this right, you’ll hear people say things like ‘You really get me!’ or ‘You actually understand where I’m coming from on this.'”
3. Solution awareness: You get their path to progress. Lastly, you have the opportunity to also show colleagues a positive path so they can move forward on their own. As suggested in the piece, give them solutions and empower them to move forward. Since you understand their situation and how they operate, you can offer possibilities to improve things and ultimately help them.
