Larry Carlat’s Twitter obsession cost him his job.

We’ve heard tons of stories of the misplaced Tweet, the inappropriate social media contact that has gotten somebody canned, but Carlat’s story, as told in the New York Times Magazine, is different: he was given the opportunity to stop.

“My tweets were a clear violation of the company’s social-media policy. I had a choice: to delete the account or face termination.”

Despite the bad economy he chose to keep the account and lose the job.
