There Are More Than Twice As Many Editors As Reporters

There were 64,590 reporters and news analysts in 1999. Over the past decade, that number fell by nearly 20,000 to 46,000.

At the same time, the number of working editors rose by 10,000 to 105,000.

So there are more than double the number of editors in the world as reporters.

We want to believe that some of this discrepancy is simply a matter of terminology—after all, your humble MediaJobsDaily blogger’s title is “Editor,” and the Patch staff who run around reporting, shooting photos and video, and Tweeting are also called editors.
