The California Public Records Act Has One Minor Flaw: It's Toothless

Interesting story from the Voice of San Diego’s Liam Dillon. Seems he’s been having difficulty getting local officials to accede to his public records requests. Dillon is trying to get San Diego City Council President Ben Hueso’s staff to turn over correspondence related to an $11,000 employee bonus request the president made. Dillon knows such a request was made, knows that correspondence relating to the matter exists–he has a cover letter as proof–but can’t get Hueso’s staff to admit that they ever sent any memos related to bonus requests.

The California Public Records Act dictates that such documents are public record and should be produced upon request.
