O.C. Register & Colleagues Get 5% Pay Cut

Freedom Communications, which owns 33 daily newspapers including the Orange County Register, announced yesterday it was cutting pay across the board by 5 percent, effective July 13.

The company’s also discontinuing the furlough program it implemented last quarter—so basically, if you work for the Register, you’re still getting paid less but now you have to show up to work.

“We are facing the challenge of a general economic situation that experts say will continue to remain weak for many months to come,” said Burl Osborne, Freedom Communications CEO, in a statement.
