The New York Times is once again reaching out to cheapskates across the nation, pleading with them to just pay dammit. The latest offer is a free four-week digital subscription to the Times. If you buy the Sunday, November 3 edition of the paper, inside you’ll find a sticker with a coupon code for the free trial, which includes smartphone and tablet apps.
In a statement, Yasmin Namini, the Times’ senior VP/chief consumer officer, said of the deal, “We want to give our newsstand readers the opportunity to try out a digital subscription at no charge so they can explore, discover and experience our vast amount of digital content with ease.”
Obviously the goal here is to get people so used to reading the Times’ digital content that they then sign up for a paid subscription.
We should note that digging through the November 3 Sunday Times for the coupon code and not buying the paper is unacceptable behavior.
