Singer Natalie Gelman Recalls a Powerful Subway Moment

One more reason to love the MTA's Music Under New York program.

We thoroughly enjoyed Nicole Levy’s DNAinfo New York Q&A with a sampling of the musicians and bands who currently make up the MTA’s Music Under New York (MUNY) program. Auditions were held at Grand Central Terminal Wednesday to select this year’s additions to a roster of subway performers that currently numbers around 350.

One of the people Levy spoke to is Natalie Gelman (that’s her, above, covering Jewel). When asked to identify the best part of busking in the subway, the singer answered with this amazing anecdote:

Gelman remembers a homeless man who came up to her late one night on the platform for the 2/3 train and dropped all the contents of his torn-up coffee cup in her guitar case.
