Men’s Health Deletes Article After Online Backlash

The editors at Men’s Health just figured out last night that women can enjoy sports. It’s true! The glossy published a piece titled “The Secret to Talking Sports with Any Woman” which basically said women can’t possibly like sports like men do. Why? Because they’re silly women! Do you really need more of an explanation than that?

The inevitable online backlash was so swift and brutally accurate Men’s Health deleted the piece.

Here’s the entire idiotic article:

Not all women share your passion for sports, in case you hadn’t noticed. The reason? They need story lines.

“Most women don’t care about stats,” says Andrei Markovits, Ph.D., coauthor of Sportista: Female Fandom in the United States. So while you’re enthusing about Dominic Moore’s scoring record, she’d rather hear about how he supported his wife’s battle with cancer—and even took a season off from the NHL at the height of his career. Treat your heroes as people and not just players on a field, and you’ll suck her in.

Just don’t expect her to wear the foam finger.

Like we said, stupid.

Almost as soon as the article went live, people took to Twitter to blast Men’s Health. Don Van Natta Jr., the brilliant investigative journalist, said he was going to cancel his subscription. Others called the piece gross and misogynistic. Our favorite tweet though, came via ESPN The Magazine senior editor Megan Greenwell:

The Men’s Health team eventually took notice of the intense hatred for the piece, and tweeted “Apologies for our ‘talk sports with her’ story. It missed the mark and the negative feedback is justified.”
