Some big media boardroom news today via Re/code’s Peter Kafka. Jon Steinberg, the recent and former president-COO of BuzzFeed, has jumped to one of the very few other American websites that can rival Jonah Peretti’s operation for traffic:
Steinberg is running the American version of the U.K.-based Daily Mail’s enormous website, formally known as MailOnline.
Last month, Steinberg told Business Insider’s Steve Kovach the following:
“I’m definitely going to do something exciting,” Steinberg said. “BuzzFeed was the adventure of a lifetime. I’m going to use the time now and find a project that excites me and then do it.”
And via telephone today with Brian Stelter, Steinberg confirmed his title (CEO of North America) and said he would continue on CNBC as a contributor:
“I wasn’t the CEO [at BuzzFeed], and that’s something I’ve always wanted.”
Asked about the prospect of competing with BuzzFeed, he said, “I see many more partnership opportunities than I see competition.”
