Halifax Typographical Union Holds Protest Against Job Cuts

Some newspaper employees are fighting back against job cuts: the Halifax Typographical Union staged a rally Saturday in response to the news that the Halifax Chronicle-Herald planned to cut 24 newsroom jobs.

The company has announced it’s closing down one nearby bureau and reducing the number of reporters working in two others. The only two reporters listed by name who were being laid off are longtime columnists Tim Arsenault and Joel Jacobson.

Politicians, labor representatives and community leaders came out to show their support for the 114,000-circulation paper’s staff.

We applaud this move, of course, but fear that it will ultimately do no good.
