Gustavo Dudamel To Be Featured on 'Tavis Smiley Reports'

The LA Philharmonic’s Gustavo Dudamel will be the subject of the final hour-long “Tavis Smiley Reports” show of 2010 this Wednesday at 8. The show will not only profile Dudamel, but will focus on the social costs of gutting musical education in pubic schools. When we spoke to Smiley last week, he described Dudamel as “not just the charismatic young man with the wild hair, we’ve all seen. He’s an intellect, and the perfect person to lead a larger discussion on the price we pay for abandoning music education.”

The show will be Smiley’s fourth special of the year and will be followed up by a PBS “Great Performances” featuring Dudamel and the LA Phil.

Smiley says that thanks to his new partnership with WNET, there’s a good chance we could be seeing more of these hour-long specials in the new year.
