Did New York Bend ASME Rules?

New York EIC Adam Moss is currently secretary of the American Society of Magazine Editors. ASME rules forbid magazine covers or logos from being used for advertising space.

Then why, Portfolio‘s Jeff Bercovici asks, did New York do a special promo run of their current issue advertising the New Museum?

New York‘s take:

Because these magazines are promotional copies mailed only to non-subscribers, we’re comfortable that they’re within ASME guidelines, which we take very seriously.

Not to mention that the New Museum’s non-profit status also puts a different spin on things.
