Brian Williams to Anchor ASME Annual Lunch

NBC Nightly News' Brian Williams will moderate a panel at the ASME's annual lunch and meeting on April 30 in the Hearst Tower. The New Republic senior editor Michelle Cottle, Nation editor and publisher Katrina vanden Heuvel, and Rolling Stone's Matt Taibbi will serve as panelists. During the event, ASME board members will be elected and lunch will be served. Williams is only the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of "NBC Nightly News." In his first two years on the job, he became the most highly decorated network evening news anchor of the modern era. He has received six Edward R. Murrow Awards, seven Emmy Awards, the duPont-Columbia University Award and the industry's highest honor, the George Foster Peabody Award. Most were awarded for his work in New Orleans while covering Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Vanity Fair later called his work "Murrow-worthy", and The New York Times said his reporting of Katrina was "a defining moment as a network reporter and anchor." In 2006, Time named Williams one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Williams is a former NBC News Chief White House Correspondent, and former anchor and managing editor of "The News With Brian Williams" on MSNBC and CNBC. He has covered numerous nominating conventions, presidential campaigns and elections, and has moderated several presidential debates. He was the first NBC News correspondent to reach Baghdad during the 2003 war in Iraq, and was part of a U.S. Army helicopter mission that was forced down by enemy fire south of Najaf. He nonetheless has returned to Iraq several times. Williams is a member of the Board of Directors of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. Michelle Cottle has been a senior editor at The New Republic since February 1999, where she has written about everything from presidential politics to race riots to the evolving institution of Washington trophy wives. Prior to joining TNR, Cottle was an editor of The Washington Monthly from 1996 to 1998. During her decade Inside the Beltway, she has written a TV column for Slate.com, a business advice column for The New York Times, an election column for AOL, and a catch-all cultural column for tnr.com. Her articles have appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, Time, and New York magazine, among other places. A former co-host of CNN's weekly political show "Take 5" and a former panelist for the PBS political affairs show "Tucker Carlson Unfiltered," Cottle is an erstwhile commentator for CNN, NBC, MSNBC, PBS, and Bloomberg News. Rolling Stone contributing editor, Matt Taibbi, worked as a freelance reporter in the former Soviet Union. In Moscow, he founded, with writer Mark Ames, an English-language satire newspaper called the eXile. Besides the jokes, the eXile earned a reputation for hard-nosed reporting of corruption both in Russian government and the American aid community. In 1992, Taibbi founded the Buffalo-based newspaper The Beast. He then worked as a columnist for the New York Press, and eventually moved to Rolling Stone. His "Press" column on George Bush's prewar press conference, "Cleaning the Pool," was included in "Best Political Writing 2003." In 2004 he was named one of the 35 most influential New Yorkers under 35 by the New York Observer. Prior to "Spanking the Donkey," a collection about the 2004 presidential campaign, Taibbi published "The eXile: Sex, Drugs and Libel in the New Russia" (Grove, 2000). His new book, "The Great Derangement" goes on sale May 6th. Katrina vanden Heuvel is editor and publisher of The Nation. She is the co-editor of "Taking Back America--And Taking Down The Radical Right" (NationBooks, 2004); and co-editor (with Stephen F. Cohen) of "Voices of Glasnost: Interviews with Gorbachev's Reformers" (Norton, 1989). She is editor of "The Nation: 1865-1990," and "A Just Response: The Nation on Terrorism, Democracy and September 11, 2001." Vanden Heuvel's "A Dictionary of Republicanisms, (An Indispensable Guide to Their Doublespeak)", was published in November 2005. She is a frequent political commentator on ABC, MSNBC, CNN and PBS. Her articles have appeared in The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and The Boston Globe. Vanden Heuvel is the recipient of numerous awards including Planned Parenthood's Maggie Award for her article, "Right-to-Lifers Hit Russia." The luncheon will begin with a reception at noon; lunch will be served at 12:30, and the program will begin around 1 p.m. with adjournment by 2:15 p.m. The program will also include the ASME annual meeting and board elections.
