AP Election Style Guide: No 'Horse Race,' Bill Clinton Is 'First Gentleman'
Just in case you were wondering.
The Associated Press has updated its 2016 election style guide. Here are some highlights:
- If (when!) Hillary Clinton wins, Bill Clinton should be referred to as “former President Bill Clinton.” “First gentleman” — always lowercase, unless at the start of a sentence — can also be used. First Dude was, unfortunately, not mentioned.
- Avoid “horse race.” “Closely contested” is preferred.
- “presidential election” is lowercase.
- President and vice president are capitalized before names, lowercase otherwise.
- “front-runner” is hyphenated.
- Avoid “populist.”
